THIS IS THE REPUBLIC DELUSION

The illustrious French author, ANATOLE FRANCE in 1921 wrote: For every monarchy overthrown the sky becomes less brilliant because it loses a star. A republic is ugliness set free.

He was undoubtedly speaking of the French Revolution in his own country which executed its own Bourbon monarch in 1793, despite a National Assembly vote in favour of a constitutional monarchy to which the King himself had agreed.

A witness to that French revolution, the British House of Commons leader the HON. EDMUND BURKE , warned it would lead to a more violent and autocratic state. The usurpation which, in order to subvert ancient institutions, has destroyed ancient principles, will hold power by arts similar to that by which it has acquired it. When ancient opinions and rules of life are taken away, the loss cannot possibly be estimated. From that moment we have no compass to govern us.’  Five constitutions later, France has an elected executive presidency.

That great Roman philosopher, CICERO, had warned in Roman times long before: Without checks or balances, a monarchy becomes despotism, aristocracy becomes oligarchy, democracy becomes mob rule and chaos. An ungovernable populace chooses someone bold and, unscrupulous, who curries favour with the people by giving them other men s property.

The obverse of CICEROS argument is that a monarchy with checks and balances does not become despotic, aristocracy does not become oligarchic, democracy does not become mob rule, and the populace does not become ungovernable.

THIS ARGUMENT IS VALIDATED BY THE RECORD OF THE WORLDS
CURRENT CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHIES.
